EBC Financial Group and Oxford Economics Department Renew Partnership on Public Economic Education

EBC Financial Group has renewed its strategic partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford for a further three years, extending a collaboration focused on making economic research more accessible to wider public audiences.

Under the renewed partnership, EBC will sponsor one annual edition of the Department’s What Economists Really Do webinar series, supporting public engagement with economic research, policy questions, financial markets, regulation, and global economic development.

Supporting Wider Access to Economic Research

The partnership is designed to help bring academic economic research to students, researchers, alumni, and wider public audiences around the world.

As part of the initiative, selected insights and discussion points from the webinar series will also be adapted into short social media videos. These summaries are intended to make key economic ideas easier to access for online audiences beyond the university community.

Since the partnership began, EBC-sponsored editions of What Economists Really Do have explored issues including tax evasion, climate change, and financial literacy. Each webinar typically attracts around 200 live attendees, while recorded sessions have generated more than 3,600 views and over 270 hours of watch time.

Education Takeaway

The renewed partnership focuses on public economic education, helping academic research reach audiences outside traditional university settings.

Economic Knowledge for a More Complex World

The renewed collaboration reflects a shared commitment to widening access to reliable economic knowledge at a time when public understanding of financial and economic issues is increasingly important.

Economic debates now touch almost every part of public life, from inflation and interest rates to taxation, climate policy, labour markets, regulation, and global development. By supporting accessible educational programming, the partnership aims to help broader audiences engage with these issues more clearly.

The initiative also supports the Department of Economics’ wider public engagement mission by helping translate academic research into formats that are easier for non-specialist audiences to understand.

EBC Links Education to Long-Term Social Impact

For EBC Financial Group, the partnership forms part of a broader corporate social responsibility strategy focused on reducing barriers to education and supporting long-term societal impact.

The company said the collaboration connects academic excellence with real-world application, helping make economic education more widely available.

“In today’s rapidly evolving global economy, access to reliable financial knowledge is more important than ever. Our continued partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford reflects EBC’s commitment to empowering individuals with the insights and tools needed to make informed decisions, while supporting the development of future talent that will shape the financial systems of tomorrow.”

— Christopher Stiegeler, Executive Director, EBC Financial Group (Cayman) Limited

Stiegeler added that EBC continues to support financial education through on-campus initiatives, academic collaborations, and memorandums of understanding with institutions worldwide, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the International University of Ulaanbaatar, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Escuela Bancaria y Comercial in Mexico, and the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga.

Education Takeaway

EBC is positioning education as a core CSR theme, linking financial knowledge, academic partnerships, and public engagement across multiple regions.

Oxford Economics Department Emphasises Public Engagement

Professor Johannes Abeler, Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford, said public engagement and education are central to the Department’s mission.

“Public engagement and education are central to the Department’s mission. Through initiatives such as What Economists Really Do, we seek to show how economics can contribute to better policy and a deeper understanding of the issues shaping our world. We are pleased to continue our partnership with EBC Financial Group, whose support helps us broaden access to economic knowledge and extend the reach of our educational activities to new audiences around the world.”

— Professor Johannes Abeler, Head of the Department of Economics, University of Oxford

The renewed three-year partnership will continue to connect academic research with wider public audiences, helping ensure that economic insights remain accessible, relevant, and useful in a more complex global environment.

Why Public Economic Education Matters

Financial markets, policy decisions, inflation trends, taxation, climate economics, and regulation all affect households, businesses, investors, and governments. Yet economic research can often remain difficult for wider audiences to access.

Public education initiatives help close that gap by presenting research in formats that are easier to understand and engage with. Webinars, short-form video summaries, and public discussions can help audiences connect academic work with real-world questions.

For financial services firms, supporting this kind of education can also strengthen broader financial literacy and improve public understanding of economic systems.

What Comes Next?

Over the next three years, EBC and the University of Oxford’s Department of Economics will continue working together through the What Economists Really Do webinar series and related public engagement initiatives.

The collaboration will focus on making economic research more accessible, helping audiences better understand the forces shaping financial markets, public policy, regulation, and global development.

The broader message is clear: as the global economy becomes more complex, access to clear and reliable economic education is not only useful for specialists. It is increasingly important for the wider public.
